UVC Medical Device Disinfection

Disinfection device

This disinfection device is based on emerging UVC LED (Ultraviolet-C light – Light Emitting Diodes) technology and a patented light guide used to transmit and distribute the UVC light in the lumen of medical tubes such as catheters and endotracheal tubes.

UVC light has been used for more than 100 years for disinfection of drinking water. UVC disinfection is a physical process where the UVC light modify/destroys the DNA of microbial cells so that cell multiplication is prevented.

The challenge

This revolutionary new technology required a housing that could accommodate both the technical and user interactive requirements the system demands. The safe handling of potentially hazardous materials was also a requirement. Preparation of the unit was also a consideration. When this took place, accessibility is needed to specific areas within the housings. These areas would then need to be sealed and enclosed during use. The ergonomic factors are both critical and challenging as the system also needs to accommodate a large variety of users.

The process

MJID worked closely with UV Clinical to explore and develop technical concepts for testing. This involved the design and production of casings as well as the sourcing of components. MJID was also tasked with refining the Industrial Design which was presented as both digital visualizations and physical ‘demo’ models.
